Fishing the waters of the Amazon basin is one of the most exciting angling experiences available today, with trophy peacock bass, payara, piranha, pacu, aruana and numerous other exotic species found throughout the region. Agua Boa Lodge - in business for more than 10 years - is arguably the finest fly fishing operation in the Amazon, with great guides, excellent equipment, and the most comfortable amenities and accommodations found anywhere in the jungle!
Standard package is a seven day / seven night package (Saturday to Saturday)
The original owner of the lodge property, Dr. Jan Wilt, built the lodge complex (originally called Royal Amazon Lodge) in 2001. Now under different ownership with a different name (the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge,) the lodge continues its tradition of excellence and top-notch customer service. The lodge itself is a spacious facility with a large dining room, a living room, bar, and game room. The game room has a snooker table, ping pong, darts and an endless array of games from chess to backgammon. There is also an entertainment area with a DVD player and satellite TV. Outside, the lodge has a large porch with a dining area, hammocks, a communal sitting area, a 20-meter swimming pool, bar area, volleyball court, and a soccer field. Agua Boa Lodge is hands-down the finest facility in the peacock bass world. Combine the accommodations with the small capacity at the lodge and you will not find a better buy in the Amazon.
Guests stay in well-furnished, spacious, air conditioned bungalows. Each bungalow has a large front and back porch, hammock, and sitting area. Inside there is a 30x30-foot main room with two double beds, a reading area, frigobar, TV, and table. The bathroom is large and well designed (a ten-inch shower head will let you know that you are definitely in the land of water!) The bungalows have hot and cold running water, flushing toilets and enough storage for the fishermen that brings everything. The lodge is also equipped with wireless internet.
Breakfast each morning at the lodge is buffet style, with a choice of hot and cold dishes, breads, pastries, cold meat, fresh fruit and cereals. In addition, fresh fruit juices and coffee are freely available. Lunch may be taken either at the Lodge, where the chef will provide a cooked meal, or a packed lunch can be prepared in the morning for those who prefer to stay on the river all day. For those taking lunch on the river, all of the boats have a cooler on board to keep food fresh, and the guides will ensure that plentiful supplies of cool drinks are available throughout the day. Each evening, a three-course dinner, with wine, is served in the dining room. The main course is a buffet, with a choice of several meat and fish dishes, all freshly prepared by the chef. Throughout the day and evening, snacks and hot and cold drinks are always available.
At Agua Boa Lodge, clients fish two to a boat with one guide. The guides at Agua Boa Lodge have been trained extensively and have many years of experience guiding fly anglers for peacock bass. While they are not bilingual, they are fairly conversant in “fishing English” and can understand your needs and communicate fishing instructions.
After breakfast each morning, you typically fish with your guide until 6:00 PM. Most clients are happy to be on the water by 8:00 AM and off by 6:00 PM, and all clients are guaranteed a 10-hour fishing day. Unlike other Amazon outfitters, this is a very flexible fishing program that can cater to all of your fishing desires.
The rivers and tributaries around Agua Boa Lodge are rich and diverse. Possible targets include all three species of peacock bass. The species include the butterfly (up to 10 pounds), the spotted (up to 20 pounds), and the temensis (up to 24 pounds, although it is almost certain that a world-record fish is present in the system. The current record stands at 27 pounds!) Peacock Bass are perhaps one of the toughest gamefish around. Their top water strike is often so ferocious that the entire fish will fly several feet of the water with the fly. Once hooked, peacocks exhibit a savvy toughness unknown to trout and largemouth fisherman. A large peacock is unstoppable on its first few runs. Anglers can only hope that the fish stays well away from any type of structure. Most fish go aerial in a tarpon-like display, gills rattling as they fly end over end, only to submerge and run again. They are not a fish for the weak of heart. Everyone that fishes Agua Boa will return with stories of stripped reels, destroyed tackle and memories of giant bass that simply could not be stopped.
The fishing boats at Agua Boa are 20-foot aluminum skiffs with poling platforms and four-stroke engines. They accommodate either one or two people fishing at a time. Houseboat options are also available for overnights on upper sections of the river. Anglers are encouraged to bring their own rods and reels. The lodge does have a small, well-stocked fly shop where guests can purchase flies, terminal tackle, accessories, and gifts.
We are happy to assist you in the organization of non-angling activities during your visit to the Amazon. That said, it should be understood that while at the Agua Boa Lodge, non-angling activities are virtually non-existent. This is primarily a trip for fishermen only. The lodge does have a great pool and deck area, and the wildlife viewing opportunities (including the lodge's "pet" crocodile!) are endless.
