Belize River Lodge is now operating a second location on Long Caye in Central Belize, a great locations that caters to anglers & non-angling guests as well. Now called the "Belize River Lodge - Long Caye Island Resort," this offerings has most of the amenities that Belize River Lodge has always been known for, along with excellent service, comfortable accommodations, and tasty cuisine, all situated on a beautiful, idyllic island. BRL’s Island Resort sits on the front of Long Caye overlooking Belize’s Barrier Reef and offering spectacular views of the blue-green waters of the Caribbean Sea. Long Caye's neighbor - Caye Chapel - is less than a 10-minute boat ride from St. George’s Caye and about 20 minutes from Caye Caulker. The small and intimate Long Caye Island Resort provides the perfect get-away-from-it-all location as well as immediate access to some of the best tarpon, permit and bonefishing in all of Belize.
The average package is a one week (six fishing days / seven nights) package, although trips and itineraries of any length can be accommodated. You can arrive or depart any day of the week, as the Island Resort has no pre-set arrival or departure days. Combination trips between Belize River Lodge and the Long Caye Island Resort will also allow guests to experience the varied fisheries in central Belize. Yellow Dog will work with you to fully understand the two different lodge settings, their respective fisheries, and how to divide your time between the two destinations based on what you are looking for, what species you want to focus on, and more.
Located on a small island of 40 acres, the Island Resort is built on a small beach that is surrounded by palm trees and mangroves. There are a few lobster shacks and a tiny settlement within 40 minutes of the lodge, but other than that, you will have the island to yourself. Belize City is just over an hour run by boat. This property has been in the Belize River Lodge family for years, but until recently it was only a family vacation spot. A recent renovation to the property, the addition of a generator, and more outbuildings for staff have now opened up this unique and remote destination for all anglers. All of the action takes place in the main, two-story cottage that features three double occupancy bedrooms, a dining area, a common-area sitting space, and a nice front deck overlooking the beach, volleyball court, palm trees, and the home flat. The rooms have plenty of space for gear, the beds are comfortable, and the ceiling fans and screened windows allow for great ventilation. There is one bathroom for the three rooms that is shared by all guests.
The original Belize River Lodge - in business for over 60 years - has always been very well known for their Belizean hospitality and their delicious Belizean Creole cuisine. The same wonderful Belize River Lodge cooks will be preparing your meals at the Island Resort, so you can expect a delicious variety of meals to be served daily. Please let us know of any dietary needs beforehand and we will be happy to accommodate you during your visit.
The incredibly productive flats system that surrounds Long Caye is a long run from many of the main fishing operations in this area. Staying on Long Caye, however, allows anglers quick and easy access to this expansive fishery. Typical runs to the flats and the more productive fishing areas are 10-15 minutes, which means that you can easily fish earlier in the morning and then come back to the lodge for lunch. In this particular area of Belize, you will find a complex system of islands, grass and sand flats - all located only a few minutes from the Barrier Reef. Bonefish within this ecosystem average from two to three pounds, with larger fish found on a regular basis throughout the year. Long Caye is known as one of the most productive tarpon fisheries in this part of the Caribbean, and the area is home to resident fish that range in size from 20 to over 150 pounds. We love the permit fishing in this area as well, and feel that Long Caye is home to some of the largest permit in all of Belize. The home flats of the lodge are close to the reef and deeper water, where permit spend much of their time.
Bonefish are common on the area's unpressured flats systems, most of which are located within 15 minutes of the lodge. The lodge flats hold good numbers of bonefish, which means that your fishing day does need to end when the guided day is finished. Permit also frequent these flats and area found throughout this area. The lodge's prime location allows the guides to fish a wide range of permit scenarios, thus increasing your odds at finding the fish during different weather systems. The numerous islands in this immediate area also enable the guides to position you on the lee sides of these land masses during difficult, windy weather, allowing you to cast out of the wind as much as possible. When conditions are suitable, you will find permit cruising the deeper flats and tailing around the reef, shorelines and flats. A wide range of tarpon in all sizes can visually be targeted on the flats around the lodge, and there are also numerous tarpon holes and creeks where anglers can blind cast with intermediate sinking lines. This is one of the finest destinations for targeting permit and tarpon and the professional and experienced guide staff knows these waters very well. (Again, Belize River Lodge has been guiding these waters for 50 years!)
Anglers fish from 23-foot pangas (flats skiffs) either one or two-to-a-boat. Each panga is equipped with a poling platform, a removable lean-bar (casting brace) on the bow, rod holders, and a newer outboard engine. All of the lodge guides are Belizeans who know the area waters well. The guides are friendly, talented, hard working, patient, and very capable of offering instruction, whether you are a fly caster or spin fisherman. It is recommended that anglers bring their own rods, reels, lines, flies, and all terminal tackle.
Belize River Lodge has a good selection of Sage and Winston fly rod and reel outfitts for rent ($20 per day) as well as a fantastic selection of appropriate flies, fly lines, and leaders. BRL can arrange to have gear for you at the Long Caye Island Resort. Please inquire with Yellow Dog about reserving some gear for your trip to the Resort, if you would rather not travel with your own.
This is a quiet and remote destination surrounded by a pristine tropical setting. The staff can arrange for nature based non-angling activities like snorkeling, beach combing, wildlife viewing, and eco-tours. The lodge's sandy beach has several beach chairs, hammocks, a volleyball court, and plenty of shade from the mature palm trees, making this a great "base camp" for those seeking a private experience and a "make-your-own-fun" type of fly fishing vacation. This is a good destination for families if the kids are older and like to explore the beaches and ocean. The beach consists of a gradual shelf leading down to a flat, so it is fairly shallow and made up mostly of turtle grass. There are no shopping opportunities or tourist hubs anywhere near this island.
International flights to Belize (BZE) go through Miami, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Charlotte. The major airlines that service Belize are American Airlines, Continental / United, US Air, Delta, and Taca.
The close proximity of Belize River Lodge (mainland operation) to the International Airport means that you can arrive into Belize at any time of the day and easily transfer to the lodge without worrying about additional in-country flights and further travel time. If you are heading directly to the Outpost you will sign in at the mainland lodge (Belize River Lodge), get your Belize fishing license, and take a panga directly to the Resort on Long Caye. If you are overnighting and / or fishing for a few days at Belize River Lodge, you may leave some of your gear and clothing at the main lodge while fishing the Long Caye Resort for a portion of your trip. This makes for less hassle and lighter packing when heading out to Long Caye.

As with fishing from the main Lodge, Belize River Lodge guides fish long hours. Since the Island Resort sits in some of Belize’s best fishing waters, you have a choice each day to fish early and/or fish late. You can start off early, come back to the Island for lunch or “slack tides”, take a “siesta”, then fish late into the evening and come back to the island at the end of your fishing day. Or, you can leave after breakfast, take a packed lunch, and fish all day, then come back to the island in the late afternoon. Either choice ends after a long day of fishing. Enjoy the evenings as you watch the stunning beauty of a sunset while enjoying appetizers in an extremely beautiful setting.
