Bimini is the closest island in the Bahamas to Florida and is only 49 nautical miles east of Miami. From the Lucayan Indian word meaning "two islands", and known around the world simply as "Bimini", North and South Bimini, along with their smaller neighboring cays, make up this group of Bahamian islands situated on the edge of the Great Bahama Bank. Being surrounded by deep water makes this one of the most prolific fisheries in the Bahamas. This was one of Ernest Hemmingway's favorite angling destinations and is a location that has been visited and fished by all of the big names in fishing over many decades. Whether you're looking for flats fish, offshore fish, or for quality family time mixed with some casual fishing, the Bimini Big Game Club is a fine option for serious anglers and non-anglers alike. You will find the overall comfort of the resort's setting top-notch.
There are no specific transfer days on Bimini, and you can stay for any number of days or weeks. Contact Yellow Dog for custom pricing and different packages.
You will find the standard club rooms, suites, and cottages all well-appointed and very colorful with artwork. The rooms are spacious, clean, and similar to a nice resort in Florida. All rooms have cable TV, coffee makers, thermostat controlled A/C, sitting areas, and plenty of space for gear and storage.
The double rooms and suites all overlook the pool, and the Club's garden cottages face the Marina. The resort pool is "kidney bean" shaped and surrounded by a shaded deck area with dozens of lounge chairs. There is an open air game room with a pool table and ping pong table.
All meals are served in the elevated Big Game Bar and Grill. You may eat inside the grill area, at the bar, or on the deck overlooking the marina and flats. The menu is extensive. You may choose from a wide range of Bahamian to American style dishes. The daily special is usually fish that was caught that day by the offshore charters. The pool side bar, Big Game conference area, Hemmingway Lounge, and main bar are all well stocked with all types of drinks and spirits. During dinner, order tomorrow’s lunch and it will be in the boat’s cooler the next day. The village of Alice Town also has numerous bars and restaurants if you are looking for additional culture and a truly local experience. You may choose between renting a golf cart or simply walking around town.
Bimini is a lesser known flats destination for the Bahamas, but it is a productive and viable big bonefish and permit destination. The flats are now protected and designated as catch and release fishing only! Six current IGFA world record bonefish have come from the Bahamas, and four of them from the waters surrounding North Bimini. Among the 23 historic Bonefish World Records caught in Bimini are a dozen of 14 pounds or more!
The flats are compact but easily large enough for three to four skiffs a day. We've found the bonefish average four to five pounds, and serious trophy fish are abundant. If you are seeking a quality over quantity bonefishing destination then add Bimini to the bucket list. We would stack this destination up against any big bone destination in the world. The flats are all within twenty minutes of the Bimini Big Game Club. The prominent bottom is hard white sand which is great for wade fishing. There are also some soft marl areas as well as oceanfront mottled bottom flats. During the lower tides the guides will pole across the flats to locate schools and tailing fish. At this point it is often best to slip out of the skiff and stalk the fish on foot. There are limited areas for longer wade fishing laps, but if you are a wade enthusiast we recommend looking at a tide chart before you head out.
The rising tide is also the most productive time to look for permit. Permit here tend to be larger than their Central American cousins and most commonly are found riding the backs of Stingrays. These fish can at times be aggressive but are still tough to feed and land. While tarpon can be seen around the Marina and during the warmer months on the flats, we would not classify this as a major tarpon destination. The guides are true professionals, informative, and fun to fish with. They are all business and take their bonefishing very seriously, but are always willing to work with anglers of all skill levels and provide solid instruction.
The island is situated on the edge of the Great Bahama Bank, overlooking the cobalt blue waters of the Gulfstream and Florida Straits. Because of the close proximity to the deep, bluewaters, the offshore fishing is world class. Hemmingway regularly fished these waters in the 1930's and made these waters famous in his book "Islands in the Stream". The average run from the Marina to the bluewater is only 20 minutes. The experienced charter captains will troll lures, baits and plugs for blue and white marlin and bluefin tuna. Wahoo and dolphin are abundant and will provide for consistent action when offshore fishing. The bottom fishing provides non-stop action for yellowtail snapper, grouper and numerous other game fish. An offshore day is a fun way to get kids into fishing. Charter captains are available and flats / offshore combo trips are easy to arrange. This is one of the easiest destinations in the Bahamas for anglers seeking a wide variety of different fishing scenarios!
The guides run 16 Dolphin Super Skiffs with 45 HP Yamahas, complete with poling platforms, plenty of rod storage, coolers with plenty of ice, and cushioned seats. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.
We feel this is one of the Bahamas finest couples and family destinations. The club’s pool, close-by beaches, and numerous non-angling organized activities make this a wonderful vacation spot for anglers and non-anglers alike. There are many things to do including glass bottom boat trips and sunset cruises on the "Bimini Blue," great beaches, historical tours of the Bimini Museum and the Dolphin House, tours to the famous "healing hole," tours of the world famous Shark Lab, the Bimini Nature Trail, Bimini Boat Building by Ansil Saunders, kayaking, windsurfing and many other activities. Just a short walk from the resort there is the Bimini Craft Center that has 17 stalls offering authentic Bahamian clothing and products. Most stores are open daily.
Bimini has scheduled air access by Gulfstream Airways, the code sharing partner of Continental/United and by IBC Airways with service to and from Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The Bimini travel concierge is able to book the airfare for bonefish package customers at a discounted rate with Continental and IBC from Fort Lauderdale. $275.00 per person roundtrip inclusive of all taxes. Western Air serves Bimini via Nassau, with two flights daily. There are also numerous charter operators that serve Bimini.
