Guatemala has gained an international reputation as having one of the highest year-round concentrations of billfish, particularly Pacific sailfish. In fact, scientists who have studied the large numbers of sailfish off the coast of Guatemala have concluded this region may be the largest breeding ground for Pacific sailfish in the world. While the prime season in Guatemala is November through May, sailfish can legitimately be caught twelve months a year. The coast in this area of Guatemala forms a giant bay, where strong currents that flow west-to-east from the Mexican coast turn back after hitting the coast of El Salvador. This creates an enormous “ocean eddy” – rich with bait and pelagic fish. Sailfish, dorado, tuna, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, and a large number of other species congregate in this area in great numbers. Inshore fishing in the region offers good action for roosterfish and jack crevalle as well. The sport fishing fleet in this area is fairly small, meaning that overall fishing pressure is light. It is a rarity to see another boat while fishing offshore and you will usually have Guatemala's calm ocean all to yourself. Depending upon water conditions, fishing may be as close as eight miles from shore or as far as fifty miles out.

Fishing Information

Guatemalan SailfishWhile there are many places in the world that claim to be the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” there is no place that can rival Guatemala when it comes to the consistent numbers of rises, bites and releases. Any brief search of the internet, numerous fishing magazines, or articles will provide figures that say pretty much the same thing: raises of over 25 sailfish per day are common, double and triple hookups are common, and - on average - between 15 and 22 sailfish are caught and released per boat, per day on conventional gear, 10-20 on the fly. There is also the possibility of raising a blue marlin any time of the year!

Guatemala is still relatively unknown for big sailfish tournaments and fancy beachfront resorts, and it is still considered a relatively new destination in the world of billfishing. The attraction, however, lies in the large numbers of fish. What is it about the waters of Guatemala that attracts so many sailfish? The shape of the sea bottom, the flow of ocean currents, water temperature, sea life, and an amazing amount of food and baitfish all contribute to creating a habitat in which Pacific Sailfish thrive. In fact some say Guatemala is the world’s most fertile Pacific Sailfish breeding grounds. The Guatemalan Government and local fishermen have also played their part by adopting a catch and release policy for billfish and mandating the use of circle hooks.

The Great Sailfishing Company offers top quality boats ranging from 28 to 38 feet, including their newest acquisition, a 35ft Bertram Sportfisher - the M/V "Reel Diver".
