For decades, there have been whispers about massive bonefish lurking in the waters of Hawaii’s most popular destination island and world vacation mecca Oahu. In 1954 an 18 pound plus specimen was pulled out of Oahu waters and it stood as the all tackle world record for over 20 years. Word spread quickly (and incorrectly) that Oahu had no flats and that all of the bonefishing was deep water surf-casting type fishing only. Our good friend and longtime steelhead bum Captain Terry Duffield (Coach Duff) has proven those who did not believe to be wrong. There are flats on Oahu, and massive bonefish, maybe the largest average size on planet earth. It is a true trophy fishery, not a numbers fishery in any way and with its location being in one of the best family vacation sites in the world, it offers great activities for the whole family to keep entertained while you hunt and shoot at bonefish that average 6 pounds and can reach upwards of world record size fish, never before landed on the fly.

Fishing Information

14lb. Hawaiin Bonefish! This is not a “nursery” fishery or a “numbers” fishery. This is a true “trophy” fishery. It offers big winds, giant spooky bonefish and ever changing weather conditions. Captain Terry Duffield (Coach Duff) has been brutally honest about these challenges from day one and this honesty is something he takes both pride in and has built a world renowned guiding operation in. Make no bones about it, this fishery is not for everyone. The largest bonefish landed by a client is 14.8 pounds and 10 plus pound fish are hooked and lost or hooked and landed weekly. 8 and 9 pound fish are very common in the waters of Oahu. An “average” bonefish is about 6 pounds. There will be both wading opportunities on “tailers” that run up to 12 pounds (ever seen a bonefish “tail” in knee keep water?) and traditional flats fishing in custom flats boats. Start and finish times are tides dependent but remember the “Coach” is a steelhead bum from Washington by trade and has no “clock” in his skiff! If fish are available duet to tides, he will grind from dark to dark hunting your bonefish of a lifetime.

Coach has a background as a longtime combat tested Force Recon Marine, college football coach (2007 Sugar Bowl) and is the only FFF certified casting instructor in the Hawaiian Islands (testing with casting legend Tim Rajeff) so you are in the very best hands in the guiding world to deal with the wild waters, winds and giant bonefish of Oahu. This is his fishery, his backyard and he will take you out dry, and bring you back safe, tired, and hopefully with memories of the biggest bonefish you will ever see anywhere, in your lifetime! He does not just “guide” he teaches all day and no matter what your fish count is, you will become a better saltwater angler. Other species available are 9 species of trevally, but uncommon in large sizes. This is a monster bonefishery primarily and monsters they are!

When 4 anglers fish with Coach, legendary Keys Captain Chris Asaro joins the team to handle two of the anglers. Chris is a former IGFA World Guiding Champion and 21 year veteran of the big bones of Islamorada and northern Florida who now guides and hunts the monsters of Oahu with Coach Duff. You have 60 years of flyfishing experience with this “Dream Team” of professional guides and they work together like clockwork to make you trip a dream trip.

Boats and Equipment

Coach Duff owns and operates two Andros Boatworks custom boats. One a 18 foot Backwater is a Panga design with Etec 90 full poling platform, stripping basket, Powerpole and all the bells and whistles needed to handle big water transits of parts of Oahu. He also runs a 16 foot custom Andros Abaco Skiff with 6 inch draft, Etec 75, Powerpole, poling platform and custom stripping cage for the “skinny” days you need to go shallow to find monsters. Each boat is custom fitted to handle the special needs of Oahu bonefishing!

Other Information

A Word From Coach Duff (Captain Terry Duffield) -

"I am a lifelong steelhead bum. If there is a ditch or river with steelhead swimming up it, I may have stood by you chasing that great gamefish with a fly. I hiked into Malibu Creek in Malibu California a few years ago looking for returning steelhead. I didn't want to catch them, just see them, to believe they still return to a place where we had thought them lost forever. Fly-fishers believe. They believe their fly will work or that the hatch will come. We believe in tradition and mesh it with modern technology and craftsmanship.

I love this thing we call fly-fishing. I love every bit of it. I love it when I'm standing in waist deep water in the middle of winter on a favorite steelhead river holding my spey rod swinging a fly I tied. I love sitting in a float tube listening to the loons waiting for that next Kamloops Rainbow to inhale the scud I'm moving along the bottom. I love watching grayling set off rings of magic all over an alpine lake as the hatch turns on. I love watching a smallmouth bass attack a skating fly as the sun sets on the horizon. I love watching a ten pound wild Hawaiian Bonefish stop my crab pattern with a jolt and take off the other way at the speed of light (at least it seems like the speed of light!)

I graduated from college with a degree in Sports Science. I have served in the elite 2nd Force Recon Company in the USMC and fought for our freedom. I've coached the great game of football from Little League to High School to Junior College and all the way to a Sugar Bowl. These personal accomplishments pale in comparison to my role as a husband and father to my wife Stephanie and my three "keiki"; Dalton, Darvin, and Deuce. No matter where my travels take me, no matter where my life leads, fly-fishing is my passion. Fly-fishing has a supernatural magic to it, just like these Hawaiian islands. The Aloha spirit is something that grabs hold of you and sinks in your cells. I am very proud to call Hawaii our home and raise our children here.

These Hawaiian Bonefish have captivated my soul much like the magnificent steelhead has. They are simply electric. I feel very privileged to take you out and show you the Hawaiian Bonefish flats of our incredible islands. A fish of a lifetime or an IGFA World Record is a very real possibility here, and it's fitting. Hawaii is the kind of place where dreams come true. Aloha and join us for an unforgettable day of catch and release fly-fishing. The Hawaiian Bonefish are ready to put your reel to the test!"
