If you love violent, explosive strikes, great acrobatics, and trophy-sized Northern Pike, then Midnight Sun Trophy Pike is an operation you will definitely want to visit! Midnight Sun fishes more than 350 river miles of the remote Yukon Drainage, and they are the only ones operating throughout this entire fishery. These professional guides provide a level of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm that ensures the trip of a lifetime for those anglers interested in hooking the largest pike in the world. Over the course of a week, the average angler can expect to land more than ten fish over 40 inches. At least 50% of clients land fish over 45 inches during their week. This two-hundred mile long Yukon tributary provides the perfect environment for growing huge Alaskan pike: cool, slow-moving water; a food source of unlimited quantity; and the time for the pike to grow old and fat - ranging anywhere from 10 pounds to 25 pounds and even the occasional 40 pound monster! Accommodations are aboard a 67-foot, custom-built houseboat with four private staterooms, two bathrooms, a large kitchen, dining and lounge areas, and several outdoor decks. You can expect great food that includes large steaks, pork chops, pastas, and great deserts, and all sodas, beer and wine are included in the package.
The standard package at M.S.T.P.A. is six nights and six fishing days, which runs from Saturday to Friday. Guests will need to overnight in Anchorage on Friday night, and fly to Aniak, Alaska on Saturday morning to begin the trip. Departures will be the following Friday morning, allowing guests to depart Aniak mid-afternoon and Anchorage in the evening.

The trip is set up for four guests per week to insure not only successful fishing but a memorable and enjoyable trip. The lounge and dining areas encompass the forward half of the boat and provide ample room to stretch out, relax and exchange the day's fish stories. The lounge area is equipped with CD stereo, DVD player and a large table that doubles as the indoor dining table as well as a late-night fly tying area. The fore and aft decks are both covered and set up to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. The upper deck has a fully covered and screened in 45 x 16' area creating a lot of space for those wanting to enjoy a bug free quiet drink and watch Alaska's midnight sun skirt the horizon.
Meals aboard Midnight Sun are substantial, which is why the staff likes to refer to the menu as ”Viking food!” You can expect large steaks, pork chops, pastas, salads and sides, and great deserts. Lunches are enjoyed in the boat each day, and the crew will pack you all of the drinks, sandwiches, snacks and chips that you want. All sodas, beer and wine are included in the package.
Midnight Sun may offer the finest trophy pike fishing in the world on more than 350 river miles in the Yukon Drainage. They are the ONLY ones operating throughout this fishery. Over the course of your week you can expect to fish sloughs, lakes, channels, river mouths, and all different types of bank structure. This is primarily a shallow-water fishery, and almost every take is visual, violent, and explosive.
The pike throughout the area average 30 to 40 inches. Over the course of a standard week, more than ten fish per angler per week OVER 40 inches is common, and at least half the clients land fish over 45 inches during their week of fishing. The number of pike found all throughout the region are unbelievable, and anglers can either focus on numbers or choose instead to hunt for large, trophy pike. Fishing techniques and equipment include a combination of large, sub-surface flies and large topwater poppers. Floating fly lines are the norm all throughout the season, and ten weight rods are recommended.
Each day, you might run five minutes or you might run 45 minutes, depending on water conditions and fish behavior. The crew of the Midnight Sun go to great lengths to rotate and rest their waters and their fish, ensuring great action and consistent numbers throughout the season. From mid-June to mid-September, the fishing is consistently good. And while fish move around and change their behavior based on water flows, temperatures and water levels, the fishing stays good throughout the season.
Sheefish are another option at Midnight Sun, and the early and late parts of the season prove to be the best times to specifically target these fish. Called the “Tarpon of the North,” these fish are known as aggressive fighters and acrobatic speedballs when hooked. You can fish Sheefish on the same rods, tackle and flies as pike, and they are generally found in the same areas and waters as pike. Anglers who have caught tarpon will be amazed at the similar look and disposition of these Sheefish, which range in size from 12 to 20 pounds.
In general, the fishing at Midnight Sun is amazing and consistently good throughout the season. Weather can play a role in the numbers of fish caught on a day-to-day basis, but overall, most anglers enjoy great action and beautiful fish over the course of a week.
Equipment includes customized shallow-water aluminum skiffs with 50 HP engines and remote controlled trolling motors. Each boat is spacious and clean, with huge casting platforms and plenty of space for gear and equipment. M.S.T.P.A. also offers all rods and reels (included in the package) as well as all leaders, tippet and flies. Back-up waders and boots are also available in the event that your luggage is delayed.
** Alaska is now enforcing a ban on felt-soled wading boots to help prevent the spread of potential waterborne parasites and diseases. Please keep this in mind while planning for your trip.
Midnight Sun is primarily a fishing-focused destination, and the number of non-angling activities are very limited. Wildlife watching is a nice compliment to the fishing, but this is not a trip for people who do not plan on fishing. Cast-and-blast bird hunting and fishing trips can be arranged in September (please call Yellow Dog for dates and details).
Anglers will first fly to Anchorage International (ANC), an easy-to-access airport that is serviced by dozens of domestic and international carriers. Your final destination is at the Aniak Airport, AK (Airport Code: ANI) This airport is serviced by Alaska Airlines and Peninsula Airways

There are no Salmon or other species that area caught on the back sloughs of the Yukon. The Salmon and other species are in the Kuskokwim drainage, including the Aniak and the Salmon.
Midnight Sun also offers float tours and Jet boat fishing adventures on the Aniak River. The Aniak River is one of Alaska's best kept secrets and hosts one of the top multi-species trophy fisheries in Alaska. Trophy sized Kings, Silvers, Rainbows and Char headline this rarely traveled drainage. Flowing through 80 miles of untouched wilderness and wildlife habitat, the Aniak River, is the essence of remote Alaskan fishing. MSTPA's experienced and professional guides will flawlessly row rafts through narrow log jams, land fish, pitch tents and show you their favorite knots. Rib-eye steaks will sizzle, as you grab your towel, for a hot shower, off your cot. Sit by the crackling fire and share fish stories. Your only priority is to fish until dark.
