RICKMON BONEFISH LODGE - ABACO, BAHAMAS

RICKMON BONEFISH LODGE - ABACO, BAHAMAS

Located on the southern tip of Abaco Island in the laid back fishing settlement of Sandy Point, Rickmon Lodge sits directly on a beach overlooking its own picturesque flat. The lodge’s founder, head guide, and owner – Ricardo Burrows – has fished the waters around Sandy Point for over 30 years, and he and his team of guides pride themselves on their bonefishing skills and local knowledge. Bonefish in this area average three to four pounds, and fish in the double-digits are found on a regular basis. Off the west coast of Abaco lie Gorda Cay and Mores Island, renowned for holding large bonefish as well as permit on beautiful, sandy-white flats. On calm days, these islands are an easy run from the lodge and well worth the trip! Wireless internet is available in the lodge's common room, and all guest rooms have cable TV and A/C.

Typical Length of Stay

Trips of any length are available, and the convenience of the Bahamas and flights in and out of Marsh Harbour makes Rickmon and Abaco the perfect getaway for a week-long fishing trip or a quick weekend escape.

Accommodations and Lodging

Rickmon's Bonefish LodgeThe 11 room lodge was built right on the ocean. Rooms are set up for double occupancy, however single occupancy is able to be accommodated. The lodge also features wireless internet, cable TV, and a new sports bar with a pool table. Some of the rooms have private balconies that look out over the magnificent flats adjacent to the village. From here it is quite possible to watch fish tailing while you enjoy your evening cocktail. The lodge also boasts a very comfortable dining room/bar area. Here you can enjoy the sumptuous Bahamian-style meals that emphasize fresh seafood. A 50' x 20' wooden deck built near the beach provides a great spot for barbeques and to watch the sun slide beneath the horizon with a cold Kalik beer in hand.

The rooms all have air-conditioning, private baths, TV and are roomy and very comfortable. Monique Burrows has considerable experience in hotel management and it shows in all the little details that make or break a bonefishing lodge. Rickmon is one of those rare fishing destinations that combines great food, lodging and service with terrific and very friendly guides. And yes, for all you Sandy Point devotees, you can book Patrick, Anthony, Nicholas, Paul, Derreck, and, of course, Ricardo and stay at Rickmon Bonefish Lodge!

Food and Beverages

Each morning, coffee will be available in the dining room beginning at 6:00 AM. Breakfast begins at 7:00 AM, and the fishing day normally runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A hearty lunch is usually packed in a cooler and taken aboard the boat. After a long day of fishing, you will return to the lodge to relax in your room or on the expansive deck overlooking the water. Dinner, consisting of such Bahamian dishes as conch chowder, lobster, grouper, chicken, and fresh vegetables, is served around 7:00 PM.

Fishing Information

Nice Rickmon's BoneThe flats of Abaco, most of which are easily waded, are made up of white sand and turtle grass. Bonefish average two to four pounds, and fish in the double-digits are found on a regular basis. Many will attest that some of the biggest bonefish in the world are found in the waters of Abaco. Off the west coast of Abaco lies Gorda Cay and Mores Island. These islands are renowned for holding large bonefish and permit on beautiful, sandy-white flats. They are recognized as two of the best places in the Bahamas to specifically target permit. On calm days, these islands are an easy run from the lodge and well worth the trip!

Sandy Point is a secluded fishing village with no other bonefish lodges in the area. So if you're tired of crowded and pressured flats, this destination is for you! The lodge has the closest access to the interior of Abaco and the surrounding keys. It is very rare to see boats in this area that are not from Rickmon's, and the guides work as a team, so you will most likely see no other traffic.

Boats and Equipment

Guides utilize high-end 16-18 foot skiffs complete with poling platforms, 90-140HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.

Non-Angling Activities and Options

Snorkeling, deep sea fishing, diving, beaching, and bird watching are other activities available at Sandy Point, and the white sand beaches adjacent to the lodge are a great place to relax.

Other Information

Southern Abaco is a beautiful area and you can count on our number one fly "The King of Abaco" to make your trip a success. Remember, a bonefish fly should sink to the bottom in 2 to 3 seconds so no matter which flies you choose, be sure that you have various flies in different weights and sizes. Do not forget to ask your guide about the type of strip you should use for each fly. A lot of guides will not offer advice unless asked, so speak up and take advantage of their knowledge.
