2018 Dates: July 16th-23rd and July 23rd-30th
We are pleased to offer Kamchatka’s first full Fly-Out program: Rainbows From Above Fly-Out Lodge. Rainbows From Above Lodge is the ULTIMATE Kamchatka fly-fishing experience. Come see for yourself the secret places Kamchatka has to offer.
You and three other lucky anglers will have private use of our leased MI-2 helicopter. Access is the key and there is no better way than flying to the river by chopper. Each night we will pour over the map of northern Kamchatka discussing the possibilities and your ambitions for the following day. Would you like to fish a river with lots of braids and back channels? No problem! Want a little river with abnormally large fish? It is yours! Perhaps begin the morning catching 5-10 pound Dolly Varden every cast and finish the day casting to rising native 20-inch Rainbows? Let’s do it! Soon to be famous rivers such as Kamlevayam, Starichok, Shishey and Levaya are only a short flight away. These rivers are completely untouched and unfished. We simply have ‘varying degrees of great’ from which to choose.
Most anglers fish six and seven weight rods and it is recommended that each angler sets up a primary rod with a floating line and a mouse pattern, and a secondary rod with a 200 to 250 grain sink-tip line and a streamer pattern. When two anglers are fishing together, a great technique is to have the lead angler fish each run with a large, surface mouse pattern, with the second angler following behind with the streamer rig. With this two-tiered approach, both anglers will catch plenty of rainbows, char and grayling! Most fish average 20”, with fish in the high 20’s caught each and every day.
Sick of plastic beads? We do not use them, ever! The Rainbows of Kamchatka are refreshingly naive and behave as if everything is real and yummy. Most of these fish will die of old age without ever having seen a fly or fisherman. Our Rainbows charge aggressively after flies of all varieties. Every part of the trip feels wild and exciting.
Each day you, three other anglers, and your American Guide will have the time of your lives sampling a wide range of unique river systems and incredible fisheries. This trip is the ultimate in exclusive with only four anglers per week maximum. Our day is catered around your ability to wade the streams. You may choose to walk three miles or just 400 yards of river; our helicopter can pick you up just about any place you stop.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
Very limited, as the rivers are primarily angling-focused destinations. That said, guests will no doubt enjoy the area itself, as the scenery of the nearby mountain valleys provides breathtaking panoramic displays: tamarack and birch forests, wildlife, snow-capped mountains, glimpses of glaciers and tarns, and salmon-rich, gin-clear water.
Dates And Availability
Due to the set weekly flight from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk, the standard package is six fishing days and six nights.
Accommodations and Lodging
Rainbows From Above Lodge is located in one of the most beautiful valleys in all of Kamchatka. Imagine having your own private Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park. Well, this is it. We have a wonderful facility that includes private cabins, natural hot springs, bear viewing platforms and a lake full of Salmon and Char. Our Lodge was featured in National Geographic Magazine as one of the most important Sockeye Salmon and Brown Bear areas on Kamchatka. Flights into the nearby mountain valleys provide breathtaking panoramic displays: Tamarack and Birch forests, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, glimpses of glaciers and tarns, and Salmon-rich gin clear streams.
Strategically located on beautiful Two Yurt Lake, we selfishly have access to dozens of untouched trophy trout streams within 30 miles of the Lodge. While the rivers of Alaska are flooded with fisherman, our rivers are flooded with fish and just waiting to be explored. Forget jumping into a plane at the crack of dawn to arrive second, third or forth in line. The amount of remote wilderness available to us is shocking. We have an exclusive 49-year lease as the only outfitter allowed within hundreds of square miles of our Lodge.
How To Get There
Yakutia Air has announced that they will once again be flying the direct route from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka for the 2013 summer season. Flights will operate weekly from mid-July to mid-September 2013. More information on these flights can be found by contacting FRA.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
With direct flight service to Kamchatka from Anchorage, anglers can once again enjoy a quick and easy flight to the best rainbow trout fishing on the planet. It is anticipated that the weekly Yakutia Air flight will depart from Anchorage on Thursday mornings, with arrival in Kamchatka that same morning. With this new schedule, anglers will no longer have to overnight in Petro on their way to camp, instead proceeding directly from the airport to the Oz camp via bus and helicopter that same day.
After a great week of fishing you will arrive back in Anchorage the following Thursday morning. This early arrival back to the States allows plenty of time to clear U.S. customs and immigration to connect up with your flight home that same day.
Please contact us for the current pricing. Remember that there is no mark-up for going through FRA. You never pay more than when you book directly with the lodge or outfitter.
Because many deposits and final payments for trip packages are non-refundable, it is highly recommended that you purchase trip insurance in the event that you have to cancel, postpone or reschedule your trip for any reason. Please be aware that this is the only way that we can assist you with compensation for a cancelled trip. After the opening of Russia in the late 1980’s, many Kamchatka residents left for a less expensive and easier life on the mainland. The population now is 30% what it was at the beginning of Perestroika. With no roads to Kamchatka everything must come to the peninsula by ship or air, driving up the cost of living. The entire peninsula has a population under 300,000 people and about 250,000 of them live in the capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatksky (Petro). By comparison, in northern Kamchatka the density of population is .08/km while Alaska is .4/km. This means Alaska is 5 times more populated than Kamchatka, Wyoming 23 times, Montana 30 times and Colorado 200 times. Kamchatka continues to be a wilderness outpost and should remain so well into the future.
