Video Library Reviews
By Larry Jurgens

For this month's newsletter I am doing a review of three DVD videos that we have just added to the Front Range Anglers rental library:

Fly Tying For Largemouth Bass, Volume I; From Fishfever.Com

Allow fly fishing author, educator and guide Chris Hanson to show you exactly how he ties two of his favorite flies for largemouth bass fishing. "The Cork Popper", which happens to be Chris's favorite fly, is shown. Also included in the video is the innovative "Inverted Diver". Chris developed the "Inverted Diver" for fishing heavy cover. Chris has taught thousands of anglers the fine art of fly tying and his knowledge and fly tying pace allow beginner and expert alike to easily follow along while watching the video. As a companion to "Fly Fishing For Largemouth Bass" DVD-Volume 1 or on its own, "Fly Tying For Largemouth Bass" DVD-Volume 1 is a must-have for any serious angler.

My critique:
This is a no-nonsense, straight forward fly tying tape with a target of the "fishing fly" as opposed to a "fly tyer's" fly. The pattern tying session for each contains an explanation of each step and each is tied with the fewest and simplest of steps. The video contains a list of required materials for each pattern. The cork popper is a do-it-yourself type of popper that is definitely for the minimalist fly tyer. The interesting thing is that Chris Hansen uses it on the other videos and he actually catches fish with it.

I give this fly tying video a rating of 3 1/2 Leapin Largemouths.

Fly Fishing for Largemouth Bass, Volume 1; From Fishfever.Com

Spend a day on-the-water with fly fishing author, educator, and guide Chris Hanson chasing largemouth bass with fly gear. In this 65 minute video, Chris teaches you everything you will need to be successful while chasing largemouth bass with a fly rod. Chris covers equipment selection, boat setup, casting techniques, and fly presentations. Chris fishes multiple types of cover and shows the viewers what to look for and how to approach each area. The video has over twenty top-water bass strikes and includes super slow motion replays of the best hits. A must have for anyone interested in fly fishing for bass or fans of top water bass action.

My critique:
This video has a lot of good Bass fishing tips and instructions. It is much better than the "Good Ol' Boys" fishing in a private aquarium in Florida! Amazingly he doesn't catch every fish that strikes!!

I give this video a rating of 3 ½ leaping Leapin Largemouths.

Smallmouth Bass on the Fly, Volume 1; From Fishfever.Com

Chris Hanson has spent his entire life pursuing virtually every freshwater fish in North America. In this DVD, you'll join him as he pursues his favorite fish of all, the Small mouth Bass. Whether you want to learn new techniques, or just see non-stop action, sit back and enjoy as Chris hooks and lands over 18 smallies. You'll see many explosive surface strikes, violent head-shaking jumps, and learn where and when to use different flies and fly lines. You'll even see how to catch smallies when they're selectively feeding on mayflies during a "blizzard" hatch! On both rivers and lakes, Chris shows how you can consistently hook up on these bronze battlers!

My critique:
This DVD has lots of fishin' and catchin' but not much instruction. It is a worthwhile video to watch for the strikes, etc. One of the really good things about it is he shows when he misses a strike or loses a fish, which makes me feel that I am not the only one who this happens to.

If you are heading up north to the mid-west area like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan or the "Boundary Waters" it is definitely worth your time.

I give this video a rating of 3 Leapin Largemouths.

Be sure to rent these three videos and see if you agree with my critique!
