About Fly Fish Guanaja

About Fly Fish Guanaja

Fly Fish Guanaja is an all-inclusive saltwater fly fishing and adventure lodge in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Guanaja is the most remote and pristine of the Bay Islands with a prolific fishery. Mountains covered in jungle tower over Caribbean flats full of permit, bonefish, tarpon, triggerfish, and many other species. Located in the peaceful fishing village of Mangrove Bight, the lodge is a jungle beach paradise. Fly fishing guides, boat captains, pilots, chefs, and more make up an authentic island team that never changes, only grows with lifetime memories. Guanaja is known as the "Green Island" of Honduras—the most mountainous and lush of all the Bay Islands with unlimited natural spring water. The population is only 5,500 people spread out in a few local fishing villages. If you are in search of the elusive permit, you are coming to the right place. The permit fishing in Guanaja will have you looking at real estate and wanting to move to the island. There is an abundance of permit that frequent the flats of Guanaja, and anglers commonly sight 10-50 permit daily, though daily numbers vary with conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Contact us
Guanaja offers arguably the best permit-to-angler ratio in the Caribbean. Anglers commonly see 10-50 permit daily with multiple shot opportunities; something extremely rare in the permit world. The island's remote location 43 miles offshore ensures minimal fishing pressure, while diverse flats (turtle grass, hard sand, coral) concentrate fish. Guanaja has been operated as a catch-and-release permit fishery since 2008, allowing the population to thrive.
Faraway Cayes is a remote basecamp 160 miles east of Guanaja with world-record-class permit (average 15+ pounds, some over 50 pounds) and huge bonefish schools. It's a separate booking and additional cost beyond the standard Guanaja trip. Faraway Cayes is ideal for experienced permit anglers seeking trophy fish in truly untouched water. Most first-time Guanaja guests fish the main island, then return for Faraway Cayes on subsequent trips.
Approximately 65% of fishing at Guanaja is done wading the flats, with 35% from boats. Guides use locally-built custom flats boats to access different areas, then pole or drift while you sight-fish from the boat, or anchor and wade large flats. Proper wading boots are essential due to coral and rock bottom. Most guides prefer wading for permit as it allows stealthy approaches to tailing or cruising fish
The 20-minute flight is faster and weather-independent but costs extra. The boat transfer (approximately 90 minutes) is included in some packages, travels inside the reef past small villages and cayes, and offers a unique arrival experience. Boat transfers depend on weather—if conditions are rough Saturday afternoon, you'll wait until early Sunday morning when seas are calmer. Both options get you to the same place.
Absolutely. While permit are always challenging, Guanaja's abundant fish population means you'll get many shots throughout the week—essential for learning permit behavior and techniques. The guides are patient, excellent instructors, and skilled at setting up anglers for success. Many anglers land their first-ever permit at Guanaja. The bonefish and tarpon also provide action between permit encounters.
