This introductory course provides the student with all the instruction to start and complete their first custom fly rod. The Introduction to Rod Building Class includes the basic techniques for assembling, guide wrapping, and the finishing of your custom fly rod.

It is mandatory that you pick out and order your rod blank and components a minimum of 10 working days prior to the beginning of the class. This will ensure that the rod blank and components will be available to you at the class start date. All blanks and components will be paid for at time of ordering.

Class session 1 will consist of the following:

  • How to “spline” the rod blank.
  • Assembling the reel seat and gluing it to the rod blank.
  • Ream and glue the grip to the blank.
  • Glue the tip-top on the blank.
  • How to align guides correctly
  • Wrap a stripping guide and/or a snake guide.
  • You will then take your rod home and finish wrapping your guides.

Class session 2 will consist of the following:

  • Inspecting thread wraps that you have completed at home.
  • A demonstration on how to apply the finish coat the thread wraps.

You will then take your rod home and finish coat your thread wraps.
Though not necessarily required, Front Range Anglers has wrapping stations for wrapping the guides and have rotisseries for applying the finish to the thread wraps. These tools are available for rent at a modest fee.

Fees:
Wrapping Station = $15.00/week and a $50.00 credit card deposit.
Rotisserie = $15.00/week and a $50.00 credit card deposit.

Rod building offers a freedom of choice, self-satisfaction, and potential opportunity to save some money. Rod building is very enjoyable, and relaxing. It is easy to learn and master. Unlike most things in fly-fishing, getting started is very inexpensive. If you are looking at purchasing a rod, or you want a rod that fits you specifically, then give rod building a serious thought and ask for the course curriculum.
