What to Expect on an Alaska Fly Fishing Adventure

Alaska's fly fishing season runs from late May through mid-October, with the optimal window depending on which species you're chasing. June brings the first king salmon and strong rainbow fishing; July and August are peak season for sockeye and silver salmon; September and October offer some of the most productive steelhead fishing in the world as crowds thin out.

Most Alaska lodges operate on a fly-in model — accessed by floatplane from Anchorage, Dillingham, or King Salmon. Rivers with minimal pressure produce aggressive, relatively naive fish.
