Laguna Madre: The Gulf Coast's Premier Sight Fishing Destination

Most anglers assume Gulf Coast redfish means murky backwaters — but that's not at all the case at Laguna Madre near South Padre Island. Here, anglers are greeted by white sands, clear waters, and redfish, speckled trout, and jack crevalle that can all be sight-fished.

This combination makes Laguna Madre uniquely compelling among Texas fly fishing destinations and puts it on par with some of the world's finest flats fisheries.

Why Laguna Madre Is Unlike Any Other Redfish Destination

The Lower Laguna Madre is one of only two hypersaline lagoons in the United States — a geological distinction that creates water clarity rivaling the Bahamas or Belize. Polarized glasses and a poling skiff are the standard tools. The fishing is entirely visual: reading the water for cruising redfish, tailing fish, and stationary feeders holding in the grass.

Redfish here range from slot-sized fish in the three-to-five-pound class up to bull reds exceeding thirty inches. Speckled trout are abundant and respond readily to topwater patterns in the early morning; jack crevalle moving through the lagoon in large schools provide explosive action when the mood strikes. Texas fly fishing is most productive from March through June and September through November, with year-round access for early risers and adaptable anglers.
