Saturday Signature Series Fly Tying Presentations

It’s officially fly tying season!

Learn different skills and patterns every week! Join us on Saturday mornings to see some of the best tyers around spin up their signature patterns. Each week will offer up instruction, patterns and techniques for tyers of all levels. We guarantee that you’ll learn something new at each and every one! We will see you there with fresh coffee and hot patterns for Colorado and beyond.

With over 800 square feet devoted to tying tools and materials, FRA has the largest and most comprehensive tying inventory in the region.

This Saturday

What better way to kick off our Saturday Signature Series than with Capt. Bruce Chard during Saltwater Saturday! Note that since we have a busy day planned for Nov. 1st, we’ll be starting this one a bit early at 9:30a.

Breaking Down Salt Water Flies

This will not be your normal how-to salt water fly tying session.  Learn how to break down a salt water fly so you can control how it will move and look exactly how you want it to in the water.  This understanding of how the fly moves in the water in conjunction with the materials, and hook size vs weight ratio is vital to knowing that you have picked the right fly for the conditions that you are fishing in.  We will tie 3 flies in this session, one each for bones, permit and tarpon.  Attendees can also expect to learn the following:

  • Importance of balance between amount of material vs. amount of weight
  • What types of materials are best for certain water depth of fly
  • How much material vs size of hook
  • How to determine the sink rate of fly
  • Does hook size matter and why?
  • Does hook strength matter and why?

A better understanding as to how your fly works and looks under the water as you fish it helps you to know where your fly is at all times in conjunction to where the fish are and helps you to correctly adjust to any changing variables.  This is super important in such an interactive sport such as sight fishing the flats for bones, permit, and tarpon.
