This Saturday

This week we are excited to welcome Judson Knowles to the bench. Judson love tying and brings a ton of enthusiasm to the bench every time he ties.

‘Who’ is Judson Knowles?

Good question really. Do we really know who we are? ‘What am I’ is an easier question to answer. I am a husband, a father, lover of the outdoors, fly tier, catcher of fish sometimes…
I have been tying and fly fishing since I was 8 years old. I was lucky enough to attend the Beginner & Intermediate Fly Tying classes taught by Ray Johnson in Southern California in the late 70’s at Orange Coast Community College. I was the youngest person in the classes by 25 years or more. The first fish I caught on a fly was a sucker on a Renegade I had tied in class. This was part of the class field trip up to Azusa Canyon. That feeling has never left; the excitement and joy are still present, even today. I am amazed every time I catch a fish on a fly that I have tied. It isn’t so much that I have “fooled” nature, it is more about something I had offered up, made of twisted feather & fur that was deemed “good enough” by a wary trout lurking below.

I am technical by nature. I cannot draw to save my life or wax on poetic about the esoteric virtues that fly fishing has instilled within me. Fly tying is about the only creative outlet I have. Sometimes I find it relaxing, sometimes frustrating but it always presents an opportunity to learn.
