Create a Smooth Tapered Body

Building a smooth tapered body of thread on a small hook, for a fly such as a Zebra Midge, is a fairly simple process, but things can go wrong pretty easily. You don’t want to end up with a misshapen or fat fly. Here, Tim shows you exactly how to use a three-step wrapping process to ensure a smooth body that tapers from front to back. His method of flattening the thread creates an even platform for the rib, as well.

Here’s the latest video in our series called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques,” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.
