Montana Fly Fishing: Where to Go, What to Target, and When to Fish

Montana's fly fishing reputation rests on exceptional public water and wild fish. The Madison is the iconic western trout stream — broad, fast, and full of wild browns and rainbows. The Yellowstone offers dry fly fishing for cutthroat, and the Missouri below Holter Dam is one of America's finest technical tailwaters, rewarding precise presentations with large, selective trout.

The Montana season runs from the famous salmon fly hatch in late May through the hopper season of July and August, and into the streamer fishing of September and October when large browns become aggressive ahead of the spawn. Fall in Montana is spectacular and widely regarded as the finest time of the season.
