Slovenia Fly Fishing
Slovenia is Europe's best-kept secret for fly fishing. Tremendous diversity in terrain and rivers offers abundance of pristine alpine, limestone, and lake waters within hour drive of each other. Anglers have opportunity for good fly fishing conditions practically every day of the season.
The Water
Krka River (Home Water):
Classic European chalk stream flowing past lodge terrace through meadows, lush forests, and villages of Dolenjska region. Fast runs and deep pools create ideal trout habitat. Medium-sized trout with good number of trophy fish. Known for prolific evening hatches.
Soca River:
Spectacular emerald-green alpine river in breathtaking valley setting. One of most beautiful rivers in world. Home to marble trout, Adriatic grayling, rainbow trout. Gin-clear water allows sight fishing.
Sava Bohinjka:
Picturesque medium-sized alpine stream with abundant populations of browns, rainbows, and grayling. Crystal-clear bottom currents. Large Danube salmon (huchen) present.
Unica River:
One of Europe's best unspoiled chalk streams in Karst region. Willow-lined banks, meandering meadows. Exceptional dry fly fishing for brown trout and grayling.
Radovna River:
Beautiful fun river near Bled with unique environment. Smaller fish but spectacular setting.
Idrijca River:
Tributaries with alternating currents, beautiful pools. Huge marble trout present.
Lakes:
Deep glacial lakes with up to 40-foot visibility for sight casting.
All waters within hour-and-a-half from Krka River Lodge.
The Fishing
Slovenia's low-nutrient (oligotrophic) streams mean fish eat constantly to prepare for winter, making fishing easier than many destinations. Northern alpine region streams stay cold year-long with high oxygen, ideal for trout even in summer.
Fish dry flies, nymphs, and streamers depending on water and conditions. Sight fishing in ultra-clear water rewards accurate presentations.
