About The Fish Ranch

About The Fish Ranch

Coffee on the beach before sunrise. A panga idling in the shallows in front of the villa. By 7am you're scanning the edges for roosterfish. By mid-afternoon you're in the pool.

The Fish Ranch is a saltwater fly fishing outfitter and fly shop run by Mary Grigsby, who lives in La Ventana year-round and fishes these waters every chance she gets. Her villa sits at the entrance to town on Bahía Turquesa, a mostly undeveloped, miles-long stretch of beach where the desert mountains meet the Sea of Cortez.

The fishery is one of the richest in Baja. Deep water sits close to shore, rocky points and pinnacles concentrate bait, and pelagic species ride the currents past Isla Cerralvo. Roosterfish are the main event in May, with jack crevalle, dorado, tuna, snapper, triggerfish and more adding to the mix.

The captains were born and raised here, many from multi-generational fishing families. They know where the bait is, where the fish are pushing it, and how to set you up for the shot.

About the Fishing

Fishing the Sea of Cortez

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez "the aquarium of the world," and La Ventana sits on one of its most productive stretches. Dramatic underwater topography funnels pelagic fish through the area, while rocky points, sandy beaches and offshore pinnacles hold resident species. Every day adapts to the conditions, and no two feel the same.

The Fishery

  • Beaches, rocky points, pinnacles and open blue water, all within a short run
  • Fishing grounds from the north tip of Isla Cerralvo, around La Ventana Bay and the lighthouse point, and south to Boca del Alamo
  • Traditional 20-25 foot pangas with casting platforms and lean bars
  • Live bait used to raise and locate fish
  • Late afternoons free for beach fishing in front of the villa

Target Species

Roosterfish The signature fish of La Ventana and the focus of the week.

  • Season: Prime from mid-April through summer, often into September
  • Habitat: Sandy beaches, rocky structure and nearshore edges
  • Characteristics: Iconic comb dorsal fin, explosive takes and long, powerful runs
  • Techniques: Sight-casting large baitfish patterns with fast, two-handed strips

Jack Crevalle

  • Hard-pulling, aggressive and often found in schools
  • A great way to put a bend in the rod between roosterfish shots

Other Species:

  • Dorado
  • Yellowfin tuna
  • Yellowtail
  • Pompano
  • Snapper and grouper
  • Triggerfish
  • Sierra
  • Ladyfish
  • Milkfish
  • Billfish

A note on timing: The Fish Ranch considers May through November its prime season, when milder weather and warmer water bring in the big "grande" roosterfish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still need help?

Contact us
Larger roosterfish start pushing onto the beaches and rocky points in April, and from then through summer they're the main focus. Late May puts you in prime roosterfish season with comfortable weather and a wide mix of other species around.
You'll fish two anglers to a boat with one captain. Pangas have a casting platform and a lean bar up front, so you can stay stable while scanning and casting. Captains run beaches, points and open water, and use live bait to raise fish into casting range.
No, but some practice helps. Roosterfish reward a quick, accurate cast with a heavy rod and a fast strip. Spend some time casting a 10-weight before the trip and come see us at the shop. We're happy to help. The captains are experienced with fly anglers and the shoulder species keep the action going.
Yes. Non-angling partners share a room with their angler and can enjoy paddleboarding, yoga, massages, hiking, biking, snorkeling and marine wildlife tours, plus the town's cafés and beach bars. Ask us about current non-angler pricing.
You can bring up to 4 fly rods, 4 reels (spare spools count) and 2 cameras without paying import tax. On the way home, every piece of fishing gear must be checked, including flies and pliers.
