One of the Last True Escapes in Saltwater Fly Fishing

Built for the adventurous angler, Australia's east cape flats provide perhaps one of the last true escapes to miles of untouched saltwater flats. These flats hold robust populations of well-known species like permit and GT, as well as lesser-known but equally exciting species like Chinamen and Blue Bastards.

With only six anglers fishing the flats on any given week, Australia's east cape delivers an unmatched sense of solitude and genuine frontier fishing.

Australia's East Cape Flats: Species, Timing, and the Experience

Australia's east cape is one of fly fishing's genuine frontier destinations — a remote stretch of Queensland coastline where the Great Barrier Reef meets extensive tidal flats and mangrove channels with minimal angling pressure. Permit and GTs here have seen few flies, which translates into aggressive, confident takes that reward anglers willing to make the journey. Blue Bastards, golden trevally, and queenfish add diversity and ensure that days on the flat are consistently unpredictable.

The season typically runs May through October during the dry season. May and June offer cooler temperatures and active fish; September and October can produce exceptional GT fishing as fish grow increasingly aggressive heading into the austral spring. Anglers should be prepared for remote travel logistics and the kind of solitude that is almost impossible to find anywhere else in saltwater fly fishing.
