Wild Trout in One of the World's Last Wild Places

Home to the largest connected stretch of protected land anywhere in the world, Patagonia is the definition of wild. Its rugged mountains, rushing rivers, and abundant wildlife make it a hotbed for outdoor adventure — and with the season peaking during North America's winter, it's an ideal escape when conditions at home are at their worst.

The voracious brown trout, trophy brook trout, and eager rainbow trout of Patagonia are sure to cure even the most severe case of winter cabin fever.

What to Expect on a Patagonia Fly Fishing Trip

Patagonia spans both Chile and Argentina, with fisheries that vary significantly by watershed and season. Argentine Patagonia's rivers — particularly those draining the Andes around San Martín de los Andes — are famous for large, surface-feeding browns that respond enthusiastically to hoppers and mouse patterns. Chilean Patagonia, farther south, offers some of the most remote and uncrowded trout fishing on the planet, including sea-run brown trout that add an additional dimension to the fishing.

The season runs November through April, with December through February offering peak dry fly conditions. March and April can produce the largest fish as browns enter pre-spawn feeding mode. Patagonia's legendary wind demands proficiency with weighted flies and adaptive casting technique.
