What to Know Before Your Golden Dorado Fly Fishing Trip

Golden dorado are found primarily in northern Argentina's river systems — particularly Corrientes and Entre Ríos — where warm, slow-moving rivers and oxbow lagoons create ideal habitat. Fish in the five-to-twenty-pound range are common; trophy fish exceeding thirty pounds are caught each season. Techniques are streamer-based: large articulated flies and topwater patterns produce aggressive strikes from fish that often hunt in packs, and wire bite tippet is mandatory.

A 7- or 8-weight rod paired with a floating or intermediate line is standard tackle. The golden dorado season peaks from September through November and again from March through April — shoulder seasons that conveniently align with North American spring and fall for anglers ready for an adventure.
