Planning Your Argentina Fly Fishing Trip

The best time to visit Argentina depends on which fishery you're targeting. The golden dorado season in the northeastern provinces generally runs from September through April, with peak action in the austral spring (October–November) and fall (March–April). Patagonian trout season runs November through April, with February and March widely regarded as prime months for large, surface-oriented browns.

Anglers heading to the dorado fisheries should come prepared for high-energy streamer fishing with a 7- or 8-weight rod, wire bite tippet, and articulated streamers or large deer-hair surface patterns. Patagonia fishing, by contrast, rewards a more refined approach — long leaders, accurate casts, and the ability to sight-fish in clear water to selective fish.
