Permit Fly Fishing: Mastering the Most Difficult Gamefish in the Sea

Permit are notorious for refusals — a fish that follows your crab for thirty feet and turns away at the last moment is fly fishing's defining experience. Permit demand an accurate cast, perfect presentation angle, and a retrieve mimicking a fleeing crab; a ten-to-fifteen percent conversion rate is considered excellent. Proven flies — the Merkin, Avalon, and Bauer crab — are crab and shrimp imitations, and strip-strikes are mandatory.
