Birddog Fishing Co.

The Most Incredible Redfish Fly Fishing in the World

The coastal marshes of south Louisiana is arguably one of the finest sight fisheries in North America and arguably the best fly fishing for large redfish in close proximity and shallow waters. Our grass lined creeks and channels, mangrove studded ponds, and sandy gulf edges will make you feel miles from civilization, though in actuality you're only 70 miles away from the New Orleans International Airport.

Whether you come early season (October/November) to encounter large schools of brilliantly golden bull reds in the 18-25lb range or late season (December-March) to target big singles back in the skinny water marsh, you will not be disappointed. More often than not, you'll find these bull reds tailing, floating, backing, and cruising less than 20 feet from the bow of your skiff.

THE BEST BENEFITS

LODGE INFORMATION

The Fishing

Redfish
Redfish are present in Louisiana during all months of the year, and range in size from 5lbs to 40lbs. Almost all fly fishing for reds is done via sight fishing, providing an angling experience of unmatched excitement. October-March is the peak time to target big bull redfish, and a 9-10wt fly rod is recommended for these larger fish.

Other Species
Aside from redfish, anglers can expect to encounter Black Drum, Sheepshead, Jack Crevalle, and Alligator Gar. Each of these species are sure to provide ample challenging and exciting experiences on the fly rod!

Accommodations

La Beau Soleil
Meaning "The Beautiful Sunshine", this guest lodge features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen. The lodge sleeps up to 6, but comfortably sleeps 4. Amenities include a washer and dryer, a Weber grill on the deck, and a firepit for evening gatherings.

Other Options
There are numerous hotel options in the town of Houma, as well as several other airbnbs available should La Beau Soleil be booked. Most hotels are 15-20 miles from the put-in, so please allow 30 minutes to drive from your hotel to the boat ramp.

Other Information

Captain Huff
Born and raised in Central Texas, Captain Huff has chased various fish species all around the globe on both light tackle and fly equipment. Eventually settling in Southern Louisiana, he now brings his decades of global fishing experience to the redfish marshes of the southern US!

The Program
3 to 5 day trips are the preferred length, as this typically allows winter weather to blow through and provides for more chances in case the weather does get bad. Typical fishing days are 8hrs long, from sun up to whenever visibility gets tough. All water and ice is provided, but it is up to the angler to pack a lunch, snacks, and any other drinks they wish to have on the boat.

Getting to Louisiana
There are numerous daily flights from across the US to New Orleans. The New Orleans International Airport is located approximately 70 miles from the lodge.
