Casa Cangrejo

Journey to the Permit Rich Waters of Xcalak, Mexico

Xcalak. Quintana Roo, México – Xcalak is a village of 375 inhabitants in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Xcalak is one of the last “unspoiled” stretches of Mexican Caribbean located on the Southern end of the Costa Maya. The world’s second largest barrier reef passes just off-shore from Xcalak and it is also a departure point for dive trips to the Chinchorro Banks (Banco Chinchorro) atoll reef system. It is designated a Mexican national reef park (Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Xcalak) and is an excellent site for snorkeling, scuba diving and fly fishing. It is 60 kilometers (37mi) South of Mahahual, the site of a new large cruise ship pier, and just north of the border with Belize.

The Fishing

The fertile waters of Xcalak have long been world renown for bonefishing, with flats holding incredible numbers of bonefish year round. Most of these fish are in the 2 to 4 pound size class, although fish up to 7 pounds are very common!

Situated in one of the most unspoiled coastal environments in the world, Xcalak is the perfect place to hunt permit. With less angling pressure than nearby Belize and abundant fish ranging from 5 to 50 pounds, Xcalak truly is a permit fishing paradise!

Other Species
Casa Cangrejo boasts year round fishing opportunities for tarpon of all sizes, as well as for numerous other species such as snook, jacks, barracuda, and sharks!
