FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS h3>
What rod weights should I bring?
Rods in the 7/8/9 weight range are standard for bonefish and triggerfish. For GTs, a 12 weight rod is generally recommended given the size and power of these fish and the size of the flies used to target them.
Do I need a reel with a fully sealed drag?
Yes, we always recommend using reels with fully sealed drag systems whenever flats fishing in order to fully protect them from saltwater corrosion.
How many rods/reels should I bring with me?
We recommend anglers bring at least two 8/9 weight setups for bonefish and triggerfish, with one serving as a backup in case your primary rod breaks. Additionally, anglers should bring one - and if possible, two - 12 weight rods for GTs.
Should I tie a bimini between my fly line and backing?
Yes, we recommend attaching your fly line to the backing via a bimini or double bimini knot.
What are the essential bonefish flies for CXI?
The CXI Special is the most well-known bonefish pattern for Christmas Island. Other productive patterns are crazy charlies, gotchas, and mantis shrimp.
What are the essential GT flies for CXI?
GT are perhaps the most aggressive fish on the planet, so fly selection is rarely an issue. As long as you have baitfish flies in multiple colors and in the 3-6 inch range, you should be able to convince them to eat.
What size tippet should I use for GTs?
Tippet in the 80-120lb range is standard issue for GTs. 120lb tippet is best for the biggest of fish, while 80lbs will suffice for smaller individuals.
Should I pack extra fly lines in case one breaks?
Yes, given Christmas Island's remoteness we always recommend you bring one or two spare fly lines in case one breaks on a coral head or during a fight.
