Clear Creek River Report

Clear Creek River Report

12-10-2025

Clear Creek varies wildly as to contions right now, with a lot of the area around Golden being frozen, to ice shelve, to wide open in the canyon. Your best bet this week will be either the Golden Mile, or up in the canyon. Still look for areas of direct sunlight, as these will have the most active fish and less ice. Be careful on any iceshelves, as these are unstable. Hatches have been primarily Midges.

Please note that we will be updating the River Reports once a week, typically on Wednesdays until the return of warm weather.

...

For dries, throw a Hi Viz Quill Midge, Hippy Stomper, Mole Fly, No See Um Midges, Parachute Adams, Hi Viz Griffith's Gnat, Dry Humper and a Purple Haze.

...

For Nymphs/subsurface use a Eggtasty, T-Midge, AR's Perdigon, Tung Stud, Pure Midge, Lil Bit, Zebra Midge, Juju Baetis, Poison Tung, Double Digit Midge, or a Spanish Bullet.

About Clear Creek Fly Fishing

When all the rivers and streams seem to be overloaded with anglers, Clear Creek always has an empty hole to fish. Clear Creek parallels I-70 from just east of Idaho Springs to Georgetown. Idaho Springs is 32 miles west of Denver. For access to the stream, take exit 240 at Idaho Springs. Turn left, then turn right on old Highway 6. The stream is open to fishing most of its length.

The water can be swift, so care should be taken while wading. a basic 4- or 5-weight outfit is fine, but bring plenty of split shot.
