Colorado Outfitters

Experience Wilderness Fishing in the Heart of Colorado

Our pack-in wilderness fly fishing expeditions provide access to some of Colorado's finest back country fishing.  We offer remote camps in several locations all providing comfortable accommodations. Our camps are set with wall tents, woodstoves, cots and foam pads. We use solar showers with an enclosure to enable clients who wish to clean up after enjoying a day riding and fishing the back country. All pack-in trips are done on horse back with mule strings. Our camps are off the beaten path and anywhere from a two to five hour horse back ride. Based on this, we recommend trips with a minimum of three days of fishing plus one day packing in and one day packing out. For guided trips, we use packable boats which further enhance the fishing and result in more fish in your net. You can expect to catch brook trout and cutthroats typically ranging from ten to sixteen inches with occasional bigger cutthroats approaching twenty inches. Our most remote camp offers fishing five different lakes all within an approximate 30 minute walk or horseback ride. Additional lakes can also be accessed from here within an hours horseback ride of the camp.

The Fishing

Early Season
Our fishing season begins with ice-out fishing typically in May for large rainbows and grayling in local waters. As we get into June, some of the lower elevation lakes can become accessible and for sure by early July. Small river fishing generally starts to get good in this timeframe too.

Backcountry Camps
Our backcountry fishing camps are generally operational by early July to mid-July but it can vary depending on spring / late season snow. Early season fishing many times offers a great opportunity to catch big fish as they are hungry after ice out and cruising the shorelines in search of food.

As we get into midsummer, late July to early August, insect activity picks up and water levels have dropped in small rivers so both lakes and rivers will be fishing well including dry fly activity. Great fishing continues into late summer and early fall.

Fall Fishing
Our primary fishing season winds down at the end of August with the start of the Archery Season. However, many times we can accommodate a fall fishing trip during the last week of August to early September. Fishing during this time can offer some of the best of the season too. Please check for availability if interested!

Accommodations

Backcountry Camp
Typically, we will run these trips out of our backcountry camps which includes wall tents, cots with foam pads, chairs, a woodstove and even a solar shower with an enclosure for those who wish to clean up after a day’s ride. We also do pack trips where we go from camp to camp.

Cuisine
Guided trips offer three meals a day starting out with fresh brewed coffee, juice and a hearty breakfast (i.e. bacon/eggs or pancakes/sausage, etc..). Lunch will generally be a sack lunch with sandwiches, fresh fruit and snacks. At dinner, clients can look forward to meals like barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes and a vegetable or salad with some home baked cookies for desert!
