Soaring Eagle Lodge

Fly Fish the Famous San Juan River

2023 HOSTED DATES: AUGUST 30th to SEPTEMBER 3rd

...

Soaring Eagle Lodge is tucked behind a mesa on the southern bank of the world-famous San Juan River, three miles downriver of the village of Navajo Dam, New Mexico. The closest Interstate is 150 miles away, so driving here will involve a few two-lane roadways of enchanting views and wildlife. From the Durango-La Plata County (DRO) airport in Colorado, the Lodge is about an hour’s drive. A smaller airport (FRM) is in Farmington, NM about 35 minutes away and the Sunport (ABQ) in Albuquerque, NM is a three-hour drive once you are in that rental car. Please coordinate your travel times to include arriving for our evening dinners at 7 pm sharp, as well as to include time for your departing breakfast at 7 am.

Soaring Eagle Lodge is the premier riverside fly fishing lodge accommodating to the refined fly-fishing experience on the San Juan River. Our booking packages include your fully appointed and charming cabin, Chef prepared lodge meals – the popular breakfast buffet, our signature hospitality hour, and of course the famous evening three-course dinners. Along with the best guides around providing expert advice on fishing to wild big browns and the infamous rainbows of the San Juan, a riverbank lunch, and even instructional tips when requested.

LODGE INFORMATION

The Fishing

Fishing the San Juan
Most fishing occurs in the Quality Waters of the San Juan, these waters begin just below Navajo Lake’s spillway and flow nearly 4 river miles. A section of ‘bait waters’ continues downriver along the Cottonwood Campgrounds and the Village, thereafter the San Juan becomes private waters. Soaring Eagle Lodge is located downriver along these private waters, allowing us to float, anchor and wade two river miles of the San Juan. In the Quality Waters, it is generally preferred to float in a drift boat. The San Juan’s legendary trout take tiny flies on light tippet, quickly putting your rod control on notice. Floating allows a guide to dance the boat and you with that mythical fish allowing the fight to play in your favor, whereas the same hookup from the static wading position, gives the trout the advantage in challenging that light tippet.
