Frequently Asked Questions

Louisiana winter weather can impact visibility and fishability on any given day. A 3-5 day trip allows weather systems to blow through and provides multiple opportunities for optimal sight-fishing conditions. You also develop rhythm with Captain Huff, learning the marsh patterns and refining your presentations over consecutive days rather than trying to cram everything into one 8-hour window.
Early season targets large schools of brilliantly golden bull reds in the 18-25 pound range—easier to locate and often more aggressive. Late season focuses on big singles back in the skinny water marsh, requiring more technical presentations but offering trophy hunting opportunities. If you want higher shot volume, book October/November. For the challenge of stalking individual trophies, book December-March.
La Beau Soleil provides the full experience with Weber grill, firepit for evening gatherings, and immediate access without daily drives. It's ideal for groups of 4 who want the camaraderie of staying together and cooking/socializing after fishing. Houma hotels work if La Beau Soleil is booked or if you prefer hotel amenities, but you'll drive 15-20 miles (30 minutes) each morning to the boat ramp. Consider whether the lodge atmosphere or hotel convenience matters more to your group.
The coastal marshes offer bull redfish in the 18-25 pound range cruising in skinny water less than 20 feet from the bow; larger fish in shallower water than most redfish destinations. The grass-lined creeks, mangrove ponds, and protected marsh create ideal sight-fishing conditions year-round, and you're only 70 miles from New Orleans rather than requiring flights to remote islands or lodges.
Captain Huff provides water and ice, but anglers are responsible for packing lunches, snacks, and preferred beverages for the 8-hour day. Plan to grocery shop upon arrival in Louisiana for 3-5 days of provisions. Bring a cooler or lunch bag to keep food fresh on the boat. This allows you to customize meals to your preferences rather than being stuck with standard packed lunches.
