About Mýrarkvísl Fishing

About Mýrarkvísl Fishing

Mýrarkvísl is a relatively small river that holds a great stock of brown trout, along with getting good runs of salmon throughout the summer. The river runs through plains on the Reykjaheiði plateau for the first 15km making it perfect for dry fly fishing. After that the river runs through a canyon where the river is a bit more powerful and you can often see the fish you are targeting. For the last 4 km the river runs down the plains by Laxamýri and into the Laxá in Aðaldal about 5km from the ocean. These extreme changes in Mýrarkvísl’s character offer you some of the most versatile fly fishing in Iceland. The river has an amazing charm with such diversity that there should always be something for every angler whether it is fishing the plains with small flies or hitch or sight fishing for salmon in the canyon pools.

The fishing season starts on June 1st, with brown trout fishing. At that time it is not unusual for angler to be catching 10-15 browns a day with a fairly good average size. Later in June the salmon start making their way up river in small numbers, but since the focus is mostly on dry fly fishing for brown trout. There are not many salmon caught in June every year. In early July the salmon run picks up and around the middle of July the salmon fishing really gets interesting, as the numbers increase dramatically.

The prime time period of fishing for brown trout in Mýrarkvísl is from June 1st to July 20th. After July 20th the brown trout tend to get selective in feeding. The best way to catch them is by targeting them with what they are feeding on and this is the time dry flies are most effective. From July 20th and throughout August and September it is all about salmon fishing on the Mýrarkvísl, as the bigger brown trout become territorial towards the end of August. We are catching good size brown trout on the salmon flies through September.

About The Fishing

Wild Trout in Wild Places: Patagonia's endless river systems are home to some of the healthiest trout populations on the planet. These fish are as wild as the places they call home, and provide a fly fishing experience unlike any other!

  • Species: The majority of the rivers that you will fish in Patagonia are home to brown and rainbow trout, as well as brook trout. Additionally, landlocked salmon call some of these beautiful rivers home. It is still possible to target native Silversides (similar to the American white fish) and Perch (Patagonian Trout) in some especially unique waters.
  • Recommended Gear: Anglers fishing in Patagonia are recommended to have a 6wt fly rod with floating line as well as an 8wt fly rod with a 250/300 grain sink tip for streamer fishing. Fishing here is conducted with everything from dry flies to nymphs and streamers, so having a good selection of all of these flies is crucial!

Accomodations

  • Lodging Overview: Anglers fishing with Patagonia Angling Company will stay at the beautiful Estancia La Paz. This impressive 7500-acre ranch neighbors Los Alerces National Park to the south, and offers exclusive waterfront access to the Rio Grande, numerous hiking trails, and the most luxurious spa in the area. Our anglers will stay in private log cabins overlooking the Rio Grande. Each cabin has central heating, a fireplace, and queen sized beds.
  • Dining: The food consists of a selected gourmet menu, which mixes local vegetables and meat. The menu is based on fresh ingredients with a significant Argentine touch. Each of our meals is accompanied with a carefully selected wine. If there is a characteristic culinary trademark of Argentina, that would be its beef and wine, so be prepared to enjoy them together! Our breakfast is the typical Patagonian breakfast, and consists of toasts and baked delicacies, with fresh juices, seasonal fruits, coffee and tea. Lunch, a fully catered meal, will take place by the river, and include meat, salads, wine and dessert.

Fishing Seasons

  • November/December: The fishing season here begins in November, once runoff has subsided and rivers return to normal flows. Fish are very eager to feed after a long winter, and the chance to catch a trophy fish is always around the corner. Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers are all productive this time of year. The weather is comparable to Rocky Mountain spring weather, with temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 70s.
  • January - Mid March: Full summer has arrived! The chances of rain in the region are very low and temperatures are in the 80´s F°, with some peaks in the 90´s F°. When it’s hot, the splash of a big trout, as you reel it in, will cool you off! Dry fly fishing is top notch and Hopper fishing is at its best.
  • Mid March/April: Fall arrives, and Patagonia becomes colorful and vibrant! The days are a bit shorter, rivers are lower, and fishing remains great since fish know that their feeding window is about to close. The fall weather is characterized by colder nights and mornings, and mild temperatures during the day.

Packing & Gear List

  • Rods/Reels: 7-8 weight rods are ideal for bonefish. 9 weight rods are perfect for permit, and can also handle lightweight tarpon duty. For the majority of tarpon, however, 10-11wt rods are ideal.
  • Fly Lines: For bonefish, permit, and the other flats species that call Christmas Island home, floating fly lines such as the SA Grand Slam and the RIO Flats Pro are great options. For Tarpon, anglers should come prepared with a floating fly line such as the SA Tarpon fly line as well as a sinking fly line such as the SA Sonar Saltwater Intermediate fly line.
  • Flies: For bonefish, anglers should come prepared with classic patterns such as Gotchas, Crazy Charlies, and CXI Specials. Sizes 4-8 are ideal for most bonefish patterns. For permit, crab flies such as the Raghead Crab and Pato's Crab are effective in sizes 2-6. Tarpon flies should include tarpon toads, cockroaches, EP Minnows, and A2Z Minnows.
  • Leader/Tippet: 10ft, 12lb fluorocarbon leaders are perfect for bonefish. 12ft, 16lb fluorocarbon leaders are ideal for permit. For Tarpon, 10ft leaders consisting of 60lb shock tippet and 30lb bite tippet are sufficient for most size fish. Anglers wishing to target toothy critters like barracuda should come prepared with wire/steel leaders as well.
  • Apparel: Standard saltwater fishing attire of sun hoodies, lightweight pants, moisture-wicking hats, sun gloves, neck gaiters, and polarized sunglasses are required to prevent against harmful UV rays while on the water.
  • Wading: The flats surrounding Guanaja are a combination of sand and crushed coral, meaning that anglers should come prepared with wading boots. Boots such as the Simms Zipit Bootie and the Simms Flats Sneaker are good options to keep your feet from getting cut up throughout your week of fishing.
