About Mýrarkvísl Lodge

About Mýrarkvísl Lodge

Mýrarkvísl is a relatively small river that holds a great stock of brown trout, along with getting good runs of Atlantic salmon throughout the summer. The river runs through plains on the Reykjaheiði plateau for the first 15km making it perfect for dry fly fishing. After that the river runs through a canyon where the water becomes more powerful and you can often see the fish you are targeting. For the last 4km the river runs down the plains by Laxamýri and into the Laxá in Aðaldal about 5km from the ocean. These extreme changes in Mýrarkvísl's character offer some of the most versatile fly fishing in Iceland. The river has an amazing charm with such diversity that there should always be something for every angler whether it is fishing the plains with small flies or hitched flies, or sight fishing for salmon in the canyon pools. The brand-new lodge features four double bedrooms with private bathrooms, hot tub, and exceptional dining with meals prepared by the chef in the open kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most anglers prefer overnighting in Reykjavík to avoid tight connections and allow time to explore Iceland's capital. The direct option works if your international flight arrives early enough for the Akureyri connection, but Iceland weather can cause delays. An overnight stay also lets you adjust to the time difference and ensures you arrive at the lodge relaxed rather than exhausted from 24+ hours of travel.
June 1 – July 20 focuses on brown trout with dry fly fishing on the plains, while mid-July through September shifts to Atlantic salmon in the canyon pools and deeper runs. If you want consistent dry fly action and high trout numbers, book early to mid-summer. For prime salmon fishing when runs peak, book late July through August. Late August into September offers both: territorial brown trout hitting salmon flies plus peak salmon numbers.
The three distinct river sections in one location: 15km of peaceful plains ideal for dry fly fishing, a dramatic canyon section with sight-fishing for salmon in powerful pools, and 4km of lower plains near the ocean where sea-run fish stage. Most Iceland rivers offer one dominant character; Mýrarkvísl gives you three completely different fishing experiences without traveling between locations.
Air Iceland Connect operates the 40-minute flight from Reykjavík Regional Airport (RKV) to Akureyri (AEY) with daily scheduled service. Book this domestic leg early as seats fill during peak summer season. The lodge can arrange ground transport from Keflavík International (KEF) to Reykjavík Regional (RKV) for approximately $130 each way, or you can take a taxi if staying overnight in Reykjavík.
The August 10-16 dates fall squarely in prime salmon season when runs are at their peak. Brown trout fishing shifts during this period—trout become selective feeders and turn territorial by late August, but you'll still catch good-sized browns on salmon flies throughout the week. If your primary goal is dry fly fishing for high numbers of browns, consider booking earlier in the season (June or early July).
