About Casa Cangrejo

About Casa Cangrejo

Xcalak is one of the last unspoiled stretches of Mexican Caribbean, located on the southern end of Costa Maya in a village of just 375 inhabitants. The world's second-largest barrier reef passes just offshore from Xcalak, and the area is designated a Mexican national reef park (Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Xcalak). With less angling pressure than nearby Belize and abundant fish ranging from 5 to 50 pounds, Xcalak truly is a permit fishing paradise. The fertile waters have long been world-renowned for bonefishing, with flats holding incredible numbers of bonefish year-round, most in the 2-4 pound class with fish up to 7 pounds very common. Casa Cangrejo sits on the beach in the heart of Xcalak, offering beautiful cabanas with soft beds, covered porches, ocean views, and a relaxing social area and bar where you can enjoy happy hour after long days on the flats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still need help?

Contact us
Xcalak offers similar habitat and fish quality with less angling pressure than the heavily-fished Belize operations. The permit range 5-50 pounds in both locations, but Xcalak's remote village setting (only 375 inhabitants) and national reef park protection mean fewer boats and less spooked fish. You'll also find the trip more affordable than comparable Belize lodges while maintaining quality accommodations and guiding.
All hosted dates (March, April, June, September/October) provide excellent year-round fishing. Spring dates (March/April) offer comfortable weather and strong permit activity. June fishing remains productive as the season shifts. September/October brings fall transition with active fish and often fewer anglers. Choose based on your schedule rather than worrying about seasonal windows—Xcalak produces consistently year-round.
The drive follows mostly paved roads through Costa Maya, making it comfortable in Casa Cangrejo's vans. You'll pass Mahahual (the cruise ship pier town) and continue south to Xcalak at the end of the road, just north of the Belize border. The remoteness is part of the appeal—by the time you arrive, you'll understand why Xcalak remains one of the last unspoiled stretches of Mexican Caribbean.
Both periods fish well. April offers spring conditions with comfortable weather and permit actively feeding. September/October brings fall transition fishing and typically lighter winds. April has only 2 spots remaining while September/October has 6 spots available, so your decision may come down to group size and scheduling. Either week will deliver excellent permit and bonefish opportunities.
While permit are the primary draw, the bonefishing at Xcalak is world-renowned with incredible numbers on fertile flats year-round. Most bones run 2-4 pounds with fish up to 7 pounds very common—excellent action between permit shots or for anglers who want to mix species. The abundant bonefish ensure you'll have productive fishing even on days when permit aren't cooperating.
